Lawn Renovations

The Results are in...

We've worked hard all Spring and it's so lovely to be revisiting our Renovation projects to check in with how they are doing. I'm sure you'll agree, they look glorious!!

Why?

These lawns were ultimately suffocating. A layer of thatch just below the surface of the lawn was acting as a barrier, stopping moisture and nutrients from reaching the soil and the roots of the lawn. This layer is a build up of dead organic matter that develops over time, which is why we suggest it gets removed every 3-4 years (however some lawn types require a higher frequency). This layer of thatch can lead to excessive moss coverage over a lawn as the moisture sits on the surface through the winter months.

How?

The layer of thatch needs raking out and the best way to do this is with a Scarifier. Now some keen gardeners have their own domestic scarifiers, however we feel that these really don't have the power to effectively deal with the thatch. Instead we use only the highest quality, heavy duty scarifiers to rake through the surface of the soil and pull out the moss and dead grass from underneath.

The process will leave the lawn looking thin and patchy which is why it's best to over seed with a quality seed to fill in those gaps. But before we do this, the seed needs help to germnate. So Aerating the soil relieves any compaction enabling the roots of the lawn and any new seedlings bury deep into the soil.

Once the seed has been spun, it's covered with a rich compost top soil to help protect the seed and improve the nutrients in the soil. And then finally, it's given a boost of our finest, slow-release organic fertiliser to provide a good level of nitrogen, stimulating growth.

What next?

The lawn then requires water! A good sprinkler and a consistent daily watering plan is the key to ensure the top soil and inturn the seed stay damp. If the seed stays damp, the nutrient levels in the soil are good and we get a little help from mother nature with some warm weather, the seed will pop and rise like a phoenix from the ashes.

After four weeks and with growth at around 10cms (inches)  we then ask our customers to mow the lawn at least once a week (but we prefer twice a week) on a high setting which encourages the grass to tiller and thicken!

Result

A beautiful, lush-green lawn that will be the envy of your neighborhood. Perfect for sipping tea next to or wandering across bare foot!
